Dishwasher Leak Leads to Dream Kitchen Remodel

The last thing this couple expected when they returned from a vacation was a flood in their kitchen.

Project Summary

The last thing this couple expected when they returned from vacation was a flood in their Bloomington kitchen.  While they were gone the dishwasher sprung a leak leaving the homeowner with an all-to-common insurance claim.  Dishwasher leaks, (loose fittings & bad seals), are among the most common reason for such claims.

For many homeowners, such a disaster can actually be seen as a blessing in disguise.  Well, perhaps a really big, stressful disguise, but an opportunity nonetheless to leverage their insurance claim into something they’ve always wanted—a dream kitchen.

“Although we handle the claim as a separate project, many homeowners use the fact that their kitchen is torn apart to initiate an additional remodel project with us to get the amenities and upgrades they have been wanting for years,” explains Bob Mock, Project Development Director at Murphy Bros.

Prior to the leak/disaster, their kitchen had been designed and modified by a family member to accommodate one of their elderly parents living with them at the time. Now they had the opportunity to do a major update to fit their new lifestyle.  They wanted to keep the basic layout, and the granite countertops, but with the updated design choices (color and surfaces) they had dreamed about for years.

Of course, we went through the entire house and replaced seals and plumbing connections wherever the next most likely leak and subsequent flood might occur.  And yes, the ice-maker connection in the refrigerator is the next most likely source of kitchen floods and insurance claims.

This isn't our first dishwasher disaster turned dream kitchen.
