The Dishwasher Strikes Again in Chanhassen!

Project Summary

When the dishwasher rinse cycle turned into a river last winter, this Chanhassen couple turned to Murphy Bros. to handle both the insurance aspect and the restoration efforts which developed into a much larger project.

“Their first concern of course was restoring their kitchen and the damage to the lower level below, mostly carpet and ceilings,” recalls Theresa Mann, the Murphy Bros. design/build lead assigned to the project. "That’s where the project started, but not where it ended.”

BEFORE THE FLOOD: The kitchen before the dishwasher leak featured white kitchen cabinets with grey accents.

Murphy Bros. deals with a lot of interior projects that involve insurance claims when appliances fail and this was the perfect example of homeowners taking the opportunity to upgrade their space following a disastrous event.

“Because of our 38 years of experience in the industry, we were able to work with their insurance company to get a realistic and adequate settlement, which laid the foundation for some significant improvements to their kitchen, living area, flooring throughout the main level and the entry area,” explains Mann.

AFTER: New kitchen has a repositioned cooktop and vent hood, refinished floors and dark cabinets along with more storage space.
BACK WALL: 30" stainless steel Samsung® combination wall oven (Model NQ70M777ODS)
Entryway closet and staircase railing are upgrades as are the matching hallway cabinets.

This 1896 advertisement in McClure's for The Faultless Quaker Dishwasher says it all. Funny thing is, with two moving parts, it probably was faultless.

“Both homeowners were great collaborators to work with,” recalls Mann, who remembers their response to the question of a color pallet during the design phase. “She said she really liked black and white, so we went with a pre-finished ebony shade on the cabinets in the kitchen, and color matched to that on the fireplace shelves surround, the windows, and the new office door,” explained Mann.

“I was a bit concerned about keeping the darker kitchen cabinets clean knowing this family likes to cook a lot and has three children under the age of six. But the eggshell finish we chose seems to have worked out quite well.”

Additional projects are in the works for these homeowners as they continue to reimagine their home to fit their growing family. So, stay tuned!

Adjacent family area. The office door, fireplace surround and mantel were painted to match kitchen cabinets.
Most people think they can paint a room. How hard can it be, right? We would say, harder and way more involved than you think or know unless you are a professional painter. Here painter Rick Dame has just finished filling the wood grain and spraying the fireplace cabinetry.
The windows were also painted to match.
Craftsmanship. We always like to check the mitered corners. The tighter, the better.
