Contemporary addition & kitchen update in Vadnais Heights MN

Project Summary

Getting rid of the dated honey oak wood work was only half the goal in this multi-faceted Vadnais Heights remodel. The homeowners surely wanted to freshen everything, but also wanted to improve the overall use of their small 3-season porch, expanding the footprint by several feet, and transforming it into a 4-season porch with heated floors. We also added more light and tied everything together with new hickory flooring. The kitchen cabinets were refinished to a custom shaded light espresso, keeping much of the oak grain visible. New Marvin® windows provide expanded views of their back yard woods. Hand-scraped flat ceilings added an elegant touch to this upgraded main floor living space.

Removing the wall and patio door separating the porch from the kitchen and dinning room dramatically increased the flow and openness as well as the usefulness of these connected spaces. NOTE: Smooth ceiling throughout creating a much softer, warmer aesthetic.

Before

Existing porch was cold and drafty in fall and spring months. Patio door was the main access point to the smaller 3-season porch, which afforded limited use for the family.
Shading dated honey oak with a custom mixed and shaded light espresso finish was the perfect alternative to replacing cabinets in otherwise good working order. NOTE: Popcorn ceiling, which was scraped smooth in the remodel.
Previous mantel-less fireplace and stacked honey oak entertainment center.

After

From 3-season to 4-season with heated  floors, more room and expanded views.
Built-in custom bench right of fireplace, houses audio components and replaces the old honey oak entertainment center. While cleaner and more attractive, this design change also accommodates a larger screen.
Although we did not supply the mantel this time, our Paint & Fine Finishing experts did finish the piece to compliment the other design and style changes to color schemes.
Existing bookcase was also refinished to match the rest of the main floor.
