Total Kitchen Rethink in Nowthen

In this their third project with Murphy Bros. this couple turned their attention to an existing well-appointed kitchen in cherry that no longer met their aesthetic or functionality requirements.

Project Summary

This homeowner had a very clear vision for the dream kitchen she had always wanted along with a unified design to tie it all together.

First on the list was removing a pantry wall that blocked the view from the kitchen to the living area where one of two fireplaces now seemed underwhelming and dated. Both were overhauled. Also on the list was enlarging the center island to accommodate more people as these homeowners really cherished their time to entertain friends and family.

The existing kitchen workflow was hampered by a design that was inefficient and even a little cramped when it came to access cabinets near the island. So, appliances were repositioned, the angled command center wall removed, a patio door to the deck was removed and large windows were added over a new sink to bring substantially more light to the space.

Access to the adjoining deck was repositioned to the right of the space as a single entry to provide more cabinet space. Ceilings were retextured, floors refinished in a lighter shade and additional recessed lights were added. Even the railing and stairs to the lower level were re-shaded to richer, darker hue for aesthetic contrast.

How did this remodel make their lives better?  It's all in this short homeowner video.

Murphy Bros. Fall 2023 Showcase kitchen with farm sink and Tempest Quartzite island countertop
BEFORE: Existing kitchen layout with 2-tiered island. It was difficult to open the freezer drawer where the island was located. Walk-way was a pinch-point.

Before & After Comparison

Before & After: Dining room fireplace gets a complete facelift and ebony color.
Before & After: Living room fireplace and new half-wall conversation nook.
BEFORE: View from living room and entry point back to the kitchen. The wall separating the two spaces is removed to open everything up.

After

AFTER: New kitchen reflects homeowners passion for charm, elegance and top shelf functionality. Note "super cove" foot detail on island trim and posts.
AFTER: Island is Cambria Torquay. Cabinets finished by Murphy Bros. Paint & Fine Finishing artists in Benjamin Moore White Dove. Floors: Sanded, stained with Dura Seal Antique Brown or lighter and finish wood floor with two coats of polyurethane (one coat oil based, and one coat Infinity II waterborne satin).

AFTER: With the wall removed it's easy to see how the new window over the main sink sheds new light on the kitchen and the expansive scenic views of the property.

AFTER: Conversation wall backs up to stairs, separating the living room from the kitchen.
AFTER: Note subtle shading and fine finish provides semi-reveal of fine wood grain.
View from living room back towards addition. Yes, a dining room table will go underneath the three Marvin transom windows, if it ever comes!
