Project Summary

As the “stay and remodel” trend continues nation-wide, homeowners are finishing smaller projects in multiple rooms as a way of making their homes much more livable within a limited budget.

In this case, we were called on to work on four different improvements in this Chanhassen home. At the top of the list was the conversion of a narrow, junk-collecting entryway closet into a butler’s pantry with a beverage center.  That required us to remove a wall, add plumbing, and tooth-in some oak flooring for a seamless appearance.

Design/Build Consultant Theresa Mann summarizes this multi-faceted remodel project in Chanhassen.

Second on the list was the addition of lighting in the master bedroom and the design enhancement of adding wood beams in the ceiling, adding a dramatic flair to the space.  We also did some work on the existing stairs leading to the second floor, removing old carpeting and refinishing the wood underneath. The final touch was adding a built-in bookshelf with a ship-lap treatment on the second floor landing along with the removal of the carpeting there and refinishing the flooring underneath.

Our mission is to make our client’s lives better by making their homes much more livable, efficient, and enjoyable.  Most of the time we do that with careful design planning and the tools of the trade. However, sometimes we can also do so by just being kind.  In this case, it was a daily kindness shown to the family dog in what turned out to be his last few days.

Here’s the note the owner John Murphy received from the homeowner shortly after his passing…

Hi John,

I am sending you this note as a very heartfelt thank you from my family to everyone at Murphy Bros. When we selected Murphy Bros for our remodel, my expectation was limited to making my house better. Instead, your team gave us extra time with our beloved family dog. We adopted Bauer 13 years ago. I have 3 children who have loved Bauer and don't remember a life without him. We made the painful decision to put Bauer to sleep around the time construction was starting. Bauer's back legs were giving out and he was not himself anymore. After your team arrived, we postponed putting him to sleep.

The construction crew at our house spent time loving Bauer every day. I saw a spark come back into Bauer that I had not seen in months. Bauer would get up in the morning to greet every person on the crew. He would lay next to the crew and follow them around the house. Your team was so kind as to request that I not lock him up when I left for the day. It gave my family the peace of mind that Bauer was happy and safe while we were away. While everyone on your team was great with Bauer, I want to give an extra thank you to Ivan who had a special bond with Bauer.

Bauer died last Friday. It has been incredibly hard on my family. After he died, we were all reflecting on how everyone at Murphy Bros made it possible for us to extend his life and make his quality of life better. I would say you have accomplished your goal of making life better for the homeowners you serve!

Thank you to you and your entire team.

With Gratitude,
Kelly

AFTER: Butler's pantry created out of an unused closet.  Flooring was "toothed-in" by hand to meld seamlessly with the existing hard-wood floor.

The term "butler's pantry" originated in the 19th century. It refers to a small room or area adjacent to the main kitchen or dining room in a large house, traditionally used for the storage and organization of serving ware, china, and silver. This space was typically managed by the butler, who was responsible for the care and inventory of these items, as well as the smooth service of meals.

The butler's pantry often contained a sink, countertop, and cabinetry, allowing the butler to clean and polish silverware, decant wine, and prepare for the presentation of meals without cluttering the main kitchen. It served as a staging area between the kitchen, where food was prepared, and the dining room, where it was served.

BEFORE: Existing closet demolished to make way for new pantry.  Note (right) carpeted stairs redone in oak to match flooring.
