1965 Fridley split gets a whole new kitchen & living room

After waiting years this couple finally got the design and remodel they wanted

Project Summary 

There are thousands of split-entry homes in the Twin Cities and most of them come with a cramped kitchen and with a small island, if any at all. And many, like this one, built in 1965, show decades of normal wear and tear. “It was a bit tired, but it was really about getting it to work better for these homeowners,” recalls Design Build Consultant David Long. “They wanted a better workflow and more storage along with a fresh new look and that's what they got.”

BEFORE & AFTER: The beam you see is decorative. The actual engineered beam is hidden in the ceiling.

So, we removed a dividing wall in the middle of the kitchen, gutted everything, replaced carpet with hardwood flooring, designed a new multi-tiered island with a built-in convection microwave oven. Aged popcorn ceilings were replaced with new knockdown treatment and the additional lighting throughout the kitchen really enhanced the brightness and openness of the space.

BEFORE & AFTER: We also replaced the carpeting with matching hardwood floor in a walnut stain complimentary to the decorative wall/ceiling trim.
BEFORE & AFTER: With the wall gone both kitchen and living room are bathed in light. We also replaced the failing bow window with a new energy efficient Marvin series.
BEFORE & AFTER: We replaced failing carpet and refinished the railing with a new color to match the rest of the remodel scheme.
