Laundry & Bath Makeover in Vadnais Heights
A laundry-mudroom merger with a full master bath makeover
Project Summary
If you live in a home long enough, you will eventually get to remodeling the laundry room. Seen as not nearly as essential as a functional kitchen or bath, the lowly laundry room is still a pivotal operational space and even more so when it supports your home-based Pilates business, as was the case in this remodel project.
"This really is the story of two different spaces in the home that were probably never really functional at the level most of us would want,” explained Cherie Poissant, Murphy Bros. lead designer on the project. “I’ve seen powder rooms with more functional surface area that this homeowner had in her laundry room,” recalls Poissant. “The previous room had a blind corner, wasted cabinet space and doors that opened up into each other, creating multiple pinch points.”

Before

Like so many homes of that era, the second floor master suite contained a Jacuzzi. That’s the once hoped for "jetted bliss" that homeowners often used only twice and then realizing the immense water and time commitments involved, decided it worked better as a large towel holder or planter—for the more ingenious decorators.

After
The entire suite was dated, had the wasted space of the large corner whirlpool tub to deal with, but also had a unique challenge in that they wanted a larger feel to the space, not to mention a larger shower with seating.
"They also wanted to create some privacy by separating the shower and commode from the rest of the bathroom. We solved that challenge by removing a wall within the existing shower, relocating the toilet rough-in and adding a wall with a pocket door to create two private spaces,” explained Poissant.

We relocated the main players—washer/dryer/sink—for functionality purposes, and added tons more storage through custom designed cabinetry on every wall. Since the laundry was accessed directly from the garage, we also added a built-in mudroom bench.

The homeowner also wanted a dressing table added on to the new custom 2-sink vanity for expanded functionality. All the surfaces were upgraded—from quartz countertops to ceramic tile flooring. Murphy Bros. Designer, Cherie Poissant, worked closely with our Murphy Bros. Paint & Fine Finishers. to achieve a custom stained finish that allows the rift sawn oak grain to show, yet visually making a focal point of white contrast to highlight the artful freestanding tub against the darker wall tile.
“It was a floor to ceiling transformation of two very important spaces for this homeowner whom had waited many years to see these rooms transformed,” summarized Poissant.
