Project Summary
Wine gets better with age, but kitchens don’t. Such was the case with this Delano residence and the retired homeowners who asked us to guide them through a fresh design and color scheme in their kitchen, dining, and living room.
- The problem to solve? The dated look of honey oak and the early 2000s in general
- The solution to enjoy? Something clean, light, efficient, and elegant.

BEFORE: Kitchen area to be remodeled was filled with honey oak.
“Grothouse custom solid wood countertops were the first thing I thought of for sheer elegance,” recalls Murphy Bros. Design/Build Consultant, Theresa Mann who led the project design phase. “The character of these surfaces is absolutely remarkable,” added Mann.
AFTER: Kitchen area remodeled including buffet cabinetry with Grothouse solid walnut.
Grothouse was used for the rolling island, the pantry, the buffet and the living room built-ins, and even the fireplace mantel, while Cambria was selected as the perfect contrasting selection for the perimeter countertops.
BEFORE REMODELING
All new appliances were specified to upgrade the look and efficiencies per the homeowner's desires. The flooring was re-sanded and re-finished with a much lighter shade to lighten up the entire space.
AFTER: Collapsable mobile island with foldable Grothouse solid walnut counter top. The Refrigerator was moved over a few feet in order to add a coffee bar and additional storage next to the pantry.
AFTER: Mobile island on casters with collapsable Grothouse counter top provides flexibility and storage.
BEFORE & AFTER: Compare wire shelving pantry with open shelving featuring Grothouse counter top.
AFTER: Homeowner photos taken after they had moved back into the newly remodeled space.
AFTER: Grothouse walnut counter top, hinged. Victorian White Fan 5x5 tile backsplash.
AFTER: Murphy Bros. Paint & Fine Finishing experts repainted the walls and staircase.
AFTER: To complete the eradication of honey oak, the stairs were reworked and refinished. To save time and money, the end newel posts were not removed but encased with a new flat post and balustrade.
AFTER: New built-in cabinets with Grothouse custom wood counter tops and fireplace mantel, new tile surround (Oldy Carbone 4x12 Mattee tile)
