New Operations VP to Join Murphy Bros. Team
And yes, his last name is Murphy.
"I am happy to announce that my oldest son, Ben Murphy, has made the decision to join the family business as the VP of Operations at Murphy Bros.," said owner John Murphy today.
In his new role at Murphy Bros., Ben will be responsible for managing PM’s, subcontractors, and the accounting and finance functions at the company.
This move is part of a larger, multi-year succession plan, that is in development, involving John and Sherry Murphy, their three kids and son-in-law Jonah. It comes at a time of new beginnings for the company with the rebuilding of their Blaine offices which was destroyed by fire last May.
Ben’s experience over the last 15 years has led him to a variety of positions in well-known companies, including Target and most recently Shaw Stewart Lumber. After graduating from Bethel College with a business accounting degree he became certified as a CPA doing accounting, tax, and consulting work for small construction companies. He then spent three years in the finance department at Target Corporation and then was offered a position at Shaw/Stewart Lumber Co., first as their Chief Financial Officer and later as their Operations Manager.
While at Target and Shaw Stewart, Ben started and completed his MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. In addition to that education milestone, Ben has also gained a great deal of practical experience in developing and maintaining a healthy company culture, which is of great importance to Murphy Bros. continued success.
“Ben is going to bring a very strong skill set along with extensive experience in bookkeeping, estimating and integration of construction management to Murphy Bros.,” says Owner John Murphy. “Boil it down, it means he is going to help us work smarter, cut down on wasted efforts and the kind of things that drive us all nuts when it comes to managing systems, including technology. I believe it’s just what we needed, when we needed it,” he concluded.
Ben will remain at Shaw Stewart though September and plans to come on board full time in November. In the meantime, he will be meeting and talking with our management and his team members to get to know them and what they do on a day to day basis.
"I know this will be good for Murphy Bros. and everyone who works with us," concluded John Murphy.
